Meet the team! This week, Melissa Powell, Vice President, talks to us about how flower subscriptions are putting a spring in her step and gives us a glimpse into her summer soundtracks. Cue DJ Jazzy Jeff…
What brings you joy?
My glass half-full optimism, despite the current climate, means I look for as much joy as I can find in the smallest of things. At the moment, it’s video calling my nieces and nephew, finding creative ways to Zoom call my friends (quizzes are so 2020) and I know it should be getting monotonous by now, but I’m still enjoying going for long walks in my local meadows with my headphones in. Recently, I’ve been listening to psychology podcasts (re-living my AS level youth and my passion for learning about the human psyche) and epic movie soundtracks to set me up for the day (such a drama queen). My Freddie’s Flowers subscription has certainly brightened up my at-home workspace with regular deliveries of beautiful fresh blooms too.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Hugging my family and friends and enjoying an endless number of BBQs in the garden – what I wouldn’t give to be blaring out ‘Summertime’ by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince with a glass of fizz in one hand, hot dog in the other and a garden filled with the people that I love. I’m hoping I can get away in the late spring / early summer for a couple of staycations which have already been booked so fingers crossed that will go to plan!
What key trend should we keep an eye on this year?
While this has been trending for a while, I think we’re going to see a surge in people supporting local communities both in their hometown and whilst on holiday. The pandemic has taught us the value of supporting local restaurants and small businesses over chains and larger corporations and I see this continuing for the foreseeable future. Equally, local tourism businesses across the world have been significantly impacted and once we can travel again, many people will want to show their support and travel with local guides whilst immersing themselves in the culture of the destination in a mindful and ethical way.
